Saturday School Main Season 7

Subjects taught at Saturday School cannot be found in a regular school curriculum but aims to teach life skills that can be adapted to improve the students’ daily lives such as dancing, singing, cooking and boxing. In Saturday School Season 7, we focused on choosing a many subjects that would utilize different skills which are new, unique and would suit the 21st century lifestyle. In order to serve the students diverse interests, we surveyed the students involved in the program by working with teacher volunteers from the school. Apart from this, we also allowed both volunteer teachers from the school and Saturday School volunteers from previous seasons to contribute their ideas for more subjects and new lesson plans. We wanted to create a new path for learning in order to form for new experiences.

ผลลัพธ์ของโครงการ

Saturday School has successfully become an inspiration for all students and volunteer teachers involved in the program. An indicator of our success is the number of people involved has significantly increased with over 30 times the amount of children and 10 times the amount of volunteers teachers when comparing Season 1 to Season 7 over our 4 year time span. It costs 6.15.575 baht for 10 classes which are 3 hours each session (calculated from our total cost of 369,345 baht divided by 600 students). Each class is taught by teachers who are experts in their subjects. The event could not happen without the hard work of all the volunteers involved. The teamwork involved in organizing each class sparked the perspective that “the foundation of education should be built upon teamwork and being an active citizen.” In conclusion, “Our Gives are Our Gains” or the giving that happened in Saturday School Season 7 can be summarized into 3 main accomplishments.

  1. Empowered People: the encouragement of creativity within every student in the program.
  2. Expanded Education Community: increasing the amount of schools that participate in Saturday School.
  3. Energized Public: becoming more aware of the community around us.

Saturday School Main Season 8+

Saturday School Season 8+ is the first time combining the Beyond Class and communication class. The program aimed to inspire students, push them to dare to dream, become eager to learn, make it count and become active citizens. The method of teaching that completes SDGs 4,10,11 and 17 objectives which are quality education, reducing inequalities, sustainable cities and communities and partnership for the goal through teaching process from the interest

ผลลัพธ์ของโครงการ

After interviewing 30 volunteers, we organized the teacher volunteers into groups. Here are what the volunteers talked about: understanding and empathy, opportunity to work with others, communication, emotional regulation, self-esteem, self-confidence, time management. Other impact ex. Conciliation skills, more interesting in volunteer, believe in your own potential and other topic to hard to group ex. be delighted to do something for society

The students who completed the program earned a higher Grit Score than students who didn’t finish. Similarly, the children’s Growth Mindset Score increased slightly overall and significantly increased in dance, singing and English. This was through celebrating ways of thinking, perseverance and effort rather than smartness or intelligence. We also awarded the students based on the same values and emphasized that our brains are constantly developing. The more difficult the task, the more we can improve.

Saturday School Main Season 8.5

Saturday School Season 8.5 began experimenting with different activities such as comic book reading. In Saturday School Season 8+, we explored the concept that “you can learn from anything” so we gave an opportunity for the volunteers to design their own subject and curriculum through Hackathon. By teaming up with teaching professionals, volunteers are able to share their creative ideas while getting professional help with logistics. The goal was to create an environment where Saturday School students are able to learn from their school and community. We emphasized the development of life skills and 21st century skills through activity-based learning and active learning.

Saturday School Student Support Season 1

We want to promote and support children who have the determination to continuously better themselves and achieve their goals. In order to overcome the challenges of economic and social restrictions, we developed a mentor system where volunteers will be able to help students plan and give advice about life skills that could potentially be useful in the future. This includes giving the students homework that is aimed at personal development and checking in with the students to ensure long term success. By establishing confidence within the children, they will have a growth mindset and persevere towards their goal. Their potential will be endless!  By surveying interests, pairing students with mentors and creating an Individual Action Development Plan, we tested this plan with the students within the foundation. We follow-up with the students to develop an individualized plan whether that is through further education or other ways of reaching the child’s goals.

In order to support students and continuously monitor their success, we created Saturday School Student Support. We wanted to be able to see the children achieve their dreams, develop themselves and choose their own path in life whether their dreams are big or small. After understanding more about themselves and others through activities and conversation with their peers and teacher volunteers, we hope the children will be more confident in their abilities and not be afraid to explore more of the world. They will be able to exchange stories with everyone in the organization. The volunteers will also act as mentors, suggesting different activities for the students to become closer to achieving their goals and investigate areas of their interest in detail. Throughout the time, they will have a “buddy” or an adult volunteer to help give advice and/or answer questions along the way.

Season 1

July 29, 2019 – September 22, 2019

Saturday School Student Support
Season 2

The “Dream of the Future” project has helped the children get closer to achieving their goals by allowing them to travel outside school and opening their perspective of the world. For example, the children visited the Science Museum, the set of a television drama and the shooting of an advertisement by Garena Thailand (entertainment field). They also attended a workshop which explained 3 topics: the design thinking process, effective ways of communication and lastly the life skills essential for the 21st century. After, they were able to design their own organization that suited their interests and knowledge but would also challenge themselves at the same time.

Season 2

November 23, 2019 – February 8, 2020

Saturday School Universal

Saturday School Universal is an extension of the main Saturday School program. We wanted to expand our learning opportunities to high school students. This extension is geared towards students that attend schools that are not yet part of Saturday School so they have a space to continue improving their skills and work towards accomplishing their goals without needing to worry about societal or economic restrictions. We emphasized providing inclusive activities, the expression of opinions and the sharing of experiences with others in the classroom. We hope they were inspired by each other’s stories and motivate them to change the world.

Saturday School International

Saturday School International is an educational non-profit project under Saturday School Foundation in Bangkok, Thailand. It was founded in 2018 by a group of international volunteer educators all across Thailand. Saturday School International aims to develop and unleash children’s true potential and create sustainable community development through English and other languages. For over two years, Saturday School International has partnered with local schools, communities, public and private sectors and government agencies. In order to create a greater impact on Thai education, Saturday School International  is now reaching beyond Thailand to provide an opportunity for international volunteers to apply for and participate in this movement of change, as we launch a new initiative,

The program will create learning opportunities for both volunteers and students, allowing for dynamic relational opportunities, culture and knowledge exchange, as well as increasing foreign language competency and self-confidence in the children, as they are afforded opportunities to hear and speak foreign languages. We elaborated on SSI’s mission and discussed each individual’s expectations. Our project leaders explained Thailand’s educational structure and helped clarify anyone’s questions and/or misconceptions about the system. Considering the team’s diverse educational backgrounds, we were able to share anecdotes of our own experience of learning in Thailand.

The opportunity to work with a partner organization from Singapore. It is a gathering of university students for social activities. Usually, they have activities in various countries. By this time choosing Thailand, Ban Sam Lang School Kanchanaburi Is a small school with students from elementary school to high school. The school is interested in allowing us to teach the children. Because the school doesn’t have foreign teachers. This is time is a good opportunity for you to communicate with foreigners who are native speakers. Ban Sam Lang School has a total of about 100 students. There are 70 students who are interested in the activity (at first it was probably only about 20 people. The highlight of this activity is the English dramatization, where we have given the story to children from Saturday and each group of children to help share the characters. And rehearsed for a show on Sunday. But the story is quite easy to understand and the help of volunteers made the show go well. You are very happy with the activity and reach the goal that you are not afraid of foreigners and dare to communicate in English.
